Wayanad landslides in Kerala have claimed 54 lives; PM Modi promises the chief minister of Kerala that every assistance will be provided.

At least 54 people were killed by landslides in southern India on Tuesday, a district official informed reporters. The army had earlier declared that hundreds more people were thought to be trapped. Early on Tuesday, a number of large landslides that occurred in the steep hills close to Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district may have trapped a number of people. According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), teams from the NDRF and Fireforce have been sent to the affected region, and a third NDRF team is currently on its way to Wayanad. According to a KSDMA Facebook post, two units of the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been ordered to relocate to Wayanad to help in the rescue operations. Residents in the impacted areas say that rescue efforts are being hampered by the continuous, intense rain, and that many people are thought to be stranded. Images on television showed water rushing over trees and rocks, destroying numerous homes in the process. The relief efforts have been complicated by the India Meteorological Department's forecast of exceptionally heavy rain on Tuesday in the state. According to a statement from the Kerala chief minister's office, relief efforts are still underway, and Indian Air Force helicopters have been called into service. Because there was no internet access in the area, rescue attempts were hindered, according to Mohsen Shahedi.
